[Flickrs] Remembering the Titanic

100 years ago, the RMS Titanic sank in the north Atlantic Ocean after colliding with an iceberg. Her sinking is one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history with approximately 1,500 casualties.

The tragedy caused widespread public outrage, and inquiries set up in the wake of the disaster recommended sweeping changes to maritime regulations that led to the establishment of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea in 1914. It still governs maritime safety today.

[Flickrs] It’s a small world after all

A few days ago, ETU! sent us a message to tell us about something very special.

In May 2011, ETU! was in Trier and visited, among other places, the Porta Nigra. While she was following her tour guide, another photographer caught her attention: He carried her dream camera, the Canon EOS 5D II, and was excitedly taking shots all over the Porta Nigra.

"Even then I was already very curious what his photos might look like, but — of course — assumed I would never be able to see them."

The photographer moved on and ETU! redirected her attention back to her tour. In another room of the Porta Negra, she immediately noticed the large window and the beautiful light that was cast into the room through it.

"And then the little girl appeared, my Porta Nigra Girl, and stepped directly and without invitation in front of the window. I steadied myself and quickly pushed the shutter."

What ETU! did not know was that, at the same time, the other photographer took a photo of the girl from another angle.

"When I arrived at home, I noticed that the window’s ‘frame’ at the upper part of my image was unfortunately cut off and not fully inside the frame. Nevertheless I uploaded the photo to Flickr and added it to the ‘Trier, Germany’ group."

Two days later, ETU! received a Flickrmail with the subject line "It’s a small world after all" from Es Feer. He was the photographer whose images ETU! had wanted to see. He wrote from his home in the Netherlands and said he had found her picture in the Trier group adding that the little girl is his daughter.

"I was so surprised that I wasn’t even able to respond immediately. And I was even more surprised and overwhelmed how small the the Flickrverse is and how it can connect people! Even today I am happy when I see photos of the ‘Porta Nigra Girl’ in her father’s stream, as my photo of her is still one of my most favorite ones I took, and in addition one of my most viewed and most faved images of all time."

More exciting news from Flickr HQ! We are thrilled to share the news that we’ve partnered with Aviary to bring you a brand new photo editing experience on Flickr. We will roll the new editor out to people over the next two weeks starting this Thursday. If you don’t see it in your ‘Actions’ menu yet, check back in a couple days.

Tens of thousands of members edit their photos on Flickr each day, so we know that photo editing is something that the Flickrverse cares about. We listened to you to find out what you value the most in an online photo editor, and the the same 2 attributes kept coming back: speed and simplicity.

Speed. Editing a photo online should be fast. And we’ve worked very hard with the Aviary team to deliver a fast and uncluttered experience. Your photo loads and is ready to be edited in seconds.

Simplicity. Editing on Flickr should be simple and fun. With the Aviary editor, beginners will find that there’s almost no learning curve and more demanding users will appreciate the versatility of the tool. You can apply new app like filters, stickers, text, and save it back to your photostream with just a few clicks.

We’re also happy to share that Aviary’s editor is written in HTML5, so it’s also works on the iPad, Please go ahead and try it out, it’s awesome! You can find more technical details about the underlining technologies in our developer blog.

We’ve been working around the clock on our bold new design, destined to become the default view for all photos on Flickr – and we can’t wait to show it to you today!

To try out the new look, click the computer icon with 2 dots at the bottom right of any photo page. This will be rolling out over the next 24 hours.

Your photos will be re-envisioned in a glorious black and white Atkinson Dither, removing the distraction of those many many megapixels and stripping your art back to its most original, naked, beautiful form. The new page design has been updated to match the new vintage aesthetic.

We’d love to see your photos in this bold new style. Take a screen shot and upload it tagged with “flickrdither” to share them with the rest of us.

We’re rolling this test out over the next 24 hours and then out as the default look in the coming weeks! Photography started in black and white, and we feel it’s time to take photo sharing back to its roots. Welcome to 2012, via the 1980s.

We’ve promised some big changes this year and we’re keeping our word. A few weeks ago we announced a new look for the Photos from your Contacts page and your feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Mostly, what you’ve been telling us is “we want to see this layout on other pages. Now!”

So today we’re happy to announce that the Justified View is coming to your Favorites.

“Go check my Favorites page, it’s awesome!”

Do you ever find yourself saying that? We do! It makes perfect sense that we all love our individual Favorites pages, after all it’s the page on Flickr where you get to handpick all the photos that mean something to you, whether it be photos of family or a stunning photo that you discovered in Explore. So it’s excellent that from now on, you’ll be able to experience your (and other people’s) Favorites page with even more gusto, using the Justified View, voilà!

As with the Photos from your Contacts page, the roll out will be gradual, but is likely to be very fast. If you don’t see it right now, check back again shortly, it’s on the way.

We working very hard to bring this layout to other pages you care about soon. In the meanwhile, have fun with it! Please keep sharing your feedback and let us know if you encounter any bugs.

All over the world, Flickrmeets are taking place and we want to take this opportunity to highlight some of them taking place today and in the next couple of days.

"One day. One roll. A window into your world through film. 24, 36, 10 or 12 shots."

But first of all, let us direct your attention to a group project that came to our attention through the Flickr Stories post last week: Roll in a day / A day in a roll will kick off this very Saturday, the 24th of March.

Tonight, if you’re in Hampshire, you can join the Star Trails Meetup in Chineham. Friday, Flickr members in France meet in Lille.

So get your analog gems ready and take part. We’re already very excited to see the results trickling in once the films are developed and uploaded to Flickr.

Then on Saturday, the early birds of the Scottish Meet Ups group are organizing a sunrise meet. Later in the day there’s the Lunch meetup in Kuala Lumpur, another in Shenyang and a Nature Walk in Twinsburg (OH) and another Meet in Pasadena (CA).

And last, but not least, on Sunday we’re very excited about the Flickr Instant Camera Photo Walk in San Francisco. Of course you are also welcome if you cannot call an instant camera your own to hang out with fellow Flickr members, grab some schwag and chat about all instant photography.

Most people live far away from greyhound racetracks and may have only seen a race broadcasted on TV or the web. With that in mind, Rachelhogue put together her set Life at a Greyhound Track – Behind the Scenes to document the events at the track near her home. She wants to gives the majestic greyhounds more publicity, show things as accurately as possible, and help them being adopted to loving homes when they retire.

[Flickrs] Starling Moot in Europe

Every year in autumn and winter, amazing Starling formations can be seen in parts of Europe including South England, Denmark and France. During the cold months, the birds become highly gregarious and turn into huge flocks of highly variable size.

Hundreds of thousands of birds can be part of the flocks. They form tight sphere-like formations in flight, frequently changing their shape providing stunning sights.

We want to make it easy for you to meet each other all around the world! That’s why we want to give you an improved tool to plan your Flickr events. Photowalks, exhibitions, get-togethers and all your other awesome activities can now be organized and announced over on our Flickr page at Meetup.com.

In the past few weeks, after our sneak-peak announcement, we’ve already got more than 228 FlickrMeets organized around the world and there are lots more to come! If you need a hand, we have created an FAQ that will guide you through finding and creating your first FlickrMeet.

[Flickrs] The sky’s ablaze with light tonight

Massive solar storms, as clearly visible on the NASA Goddard Photo and Video‘s photo on the left, are sparking intense Northern Lights displays for skywatchers at high latitudes since yesterday. They are reported to be visible again tonight, as a wave of charged particles reaches Earth. You can find even more photos in our Aurora Borealis search with more pictures from last night.

[Flickrs] Photographer Spotlight: Varlamov

Ilya Varlamov, known as varlamov here on Flickr, takes inspiring travel and news photographs that immediately caught our eye and inspired us to talk to him.

During the last weeks, Ilya documented people and places in his hometown Moscow in Russia, painting an unbiased picture of the events leading up to the Russian elections that took place last weekend.

Varlamov has been interested in photography all his live, but five years ago, in 2007, he realized that he can turn his hobby into a business that could pay his bills. He tells us that he uses a lot of the money he earns for his photography and for traveling.

He enjoys combining his travel with documenting the world around him from as many different angles as possible: "Documentary photography is my passion because I love to travel and to get to know the ordinary lives of people. I visit different places around the world, trying to shoot what is typical for the location I am at."

"Most travelers spend money to take part in guided tours, visit museums or other symbolic places. When they return home, they tell their friends and families about the cool places they have visited. Most of them don’t realize that this is not authentic life. Residents live the real life and don’t visit museums or do sightseeing every day. I delete this ‘fog’ with my pictures, I show the real life — the good and the bad — and I’m also interested in architecture because it is part of people’s lives and my passion! You wouldn’t believe it, but I buy flight tickets even if it’s just for one complex of buildings, for example the City of Arts & Science in Valencia."

Varlamov gained experience with both Canon and Nikon gear

"For many years I used Canon equipment. I began with cheap mirror cameras, but over the years upgraded the bodys and the lenses I use. This summer, I changed all my gear to Nikon: It is made of my Nikon D3s body and several zoom lenses, the 14-24mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, as well as two primes, a 24mm f/1.4 and a 50mm f/1.4. There are no special settings I use to get my photos, as they ultimately depend on the conditions, but I’m always trying as much as possible to avoid using flash."

"One special piece of equipment is my photo helicopter. I bought it for my agency “28-300″ and use it for commercial photoshooting. It’s a traditional manual radio helicopter with an attached camera underneath it. I made the purchase because flights over Moscow are prohibited, but some owners of industry or buildings want to have pictures from above. You can find out more in my set ‘We fly!’"

"Although I am usually low on time, I enjoy watching the simple photostreams of Porter Yates, Marc, be my model !!!, and cookiesound in particular. I am also inspired by Photofreaks‘ pictures, as they take fantastic shots of usualy things and — of course — architecture.

Given Varlamov’s passion, he enjoys visiting architecture and interior design groups here on Flickr: "There I can find pictures of different interesting buildings sometimes taken from interesting locations. I also love groups which are dedicated to countries. Before visiting new places I often watch such communities to plan what to shoot."

Lastly, Ilya’s final words of advice are: "Feel free, be yourself and be open to the world."

Back in January, we announced some pretty big changes were going to happen this year. We’re hard at work to make your Flickr experience fresher, more gorgeous and super intuitive to use. It’s our goal to make the interface as streamlined as possible, so you can enjoy sharing your wonderful photography and exploring all of the awesome stories here on Flickr.

Justified View

Today, we’re excited to introduce a new look for the Photos from your Contacts page, called the Justified layout. We created this new view to make it easier to see the stories your friends are telling with their photos. While the previous layout choices are still available, the new design optimizes for seamlessly displaying more images at larger sizes, so you can see more of the activity from contacts, friends and family at once.

Psst. Panoroma photos look particularly stunning in the new layout.

Needless to say, our Justified layout always respects the aspect ratio of the original image and will never crop your photos. We’ve also added quick access to comment on and fave directly on photos in this view, so it’s easier than ever to interact and engage with your friends.

We’ll be rolling out Justified view to all of our members over the next few days, so if you don’t see it right away, be sure to check your contacts page later this week.

Coming up!

The new Justified view will appear as a view option on other Flickr pages soon and is just the first of many changes we’re working on. A lot of improvements on core parts of the site are already in the pipeline and will be available over the course of the year. We hope you will keep telling us what you think as you start to see the new Flickr and letting us know what you enjoy and what we can do better.

We have created help forum threads for bugs you encounter and general feedback on the Justified layout and are looking forward to hearing from you.

We all love Flickr for its ability to bring us all together. To allow us to share our photography, our passion, and our stories with others. And then somtimes the unexpected happens and we are asked if someone can publish our work. Time passes and then that truly magical moment happens when we see our work for the first time printed, brought to life with professional inks on paper.

All of the above photos tell such a wonderful story. They invite us to discover even more photos of works from within the Flickrverse that have been published during the last year.

This weekend, February 25 and 26, our very own Jamal will be at Photo Hack Day 2 in New York to give a presentation on the Flickr API and to answer any questions you may have while hacking.

What’s in it for me? First and foremost, a lot of fun, hanging out with fellow hackers. There will be awesome APIs and developers, food and drink aplenty, and cool evening activities. Oh, and did we mention that the winners of Photo Hack Day can get up to $5,000 in cash? Or that the best use of the Flickr API will get a $100 gift code for the Photojojo store? And iIf this is still not enough, every participant (yes, even if your app doesn’t make it into the top Photo Hack Day apps) will get one year of Flickr Pro with all it’s benefits. Yay!

What’s an API, you ask? It’s a system that third parties can use to programmatically access Flickr. When iPhoto sends your photos to the site? That’s using our API.

Here are some awesome examples of people using our API:

commonsExplorer:
A Java application from the University of Canberra that pulls in information about the Commons collection via the API and builds a text cloud from the titles of photos, which lets you click on related words to show matching images.

Flickr Poet:
Turns lyrics or a poem into a photographic display based off the words, using images from Flickr.
